⚡️ About Current Affairs
Hi, I’m Marc Mültin – and I’ve spent the past 15 years deep in the technology that makes electric vehicles talk to the grid, power our homes, stablize the grid, and reshape how energy flows.
I hold a PhD in Computer Science, where I researched how EVs could act as mobile energy and storage devices for smart homes and the grid – back when most people still thought that idea was sci-fi.
Since then, I’ve helped companies around the world make sense of EV communication standards: from co-authoring ISO 15118 (how EVs talk to chargers) and OCPP 2.0.1 (how chargers talk to the cloud), to publishing The ISO 15118 Manual, industry white papers, online courses, and hands-on training sessions.
I also created widely used open-source projects – RISE V2G and Josev Community – that have helped countless teams test and validate their ISO 15118 and OCPP 2.0.1 implementations before releasing them into the wild, laying the groundwork for more reliable and interoperable EV charging systems.
I later founded Switch EV, a company built around these ideas, which was acquired by Believ, a London-based Charge Point Operator (CPO).
Today, I’m focused on the intersection of EV charging, energy systems, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), Plug & Charge, Cybersecurity, and Agentic AI – helping charge point operators build smarter, better, more reliable EV charging networks that just work and are loved by EV drivers.
Why Current Affairs?
Because “current” has two meanings:
⚡ the flow of electricity that powers EVs and charging networks – and the flow ideas that drive the innovation behind what’s happening in this industry right now.
This publication sits at that intersection. Each article aims to demystify the technologies, standards, and ideas shaping how EVs, chargers, the grid, and third-party systems talk to each other.
Think of it as your inside view into the systems and standards that quietly power the much needed transition to electric mobility.
Who it’s for
If you’re a charge point operator, EV or charger manufacturer, mobility service provider, utility, consultant, researcher, or simply someone who wants to really understand how the EV ecosystem fits together – this space is for you.
You won’t find generic summaries here.
Instead, you’ll get:
Clear explanations of complex standards (e.g. ISO 15118, OCPP)
Insights into the latest V2G and regulatory developments across various markets
Explorations of how AI and automation can make EV charging networks smarter and more reliable
In short: the current affairs of EV charging – written by someone who’s been building it from the inside for more than a decade.
What to expect
I’ll share:
Deep dives that make technical standards readable and practical
Behind-the-scenes perspectives from industry professionals
Reflections on innovation, policies, and the future of EVs as mobile batteries
Operational insights from a Charge Point Operator’s view
Practical explorations of how AI and automation can make EV charging networks more reliable and smarter
You’ll come away with both clarity and context – whether you build chargers, design systems, or shape policy.
